I’ve spent the past few days bringing myself up to speed on iOS Mapkit, Annotations, and more importantly, sending and consuming web data.
Petroleum Field Calculator XL
The Petroleum Field Calculator for iPad is now ready on iTunes. Helps simplify some common oilfield formulas for use by oilfield professionals. One cool thing I added to this was a live update of the price of crude oil that runs throughout the app. Also it features some save data utility and email capability.

Theres a reason they’re called Smartphones
Theres a lot of technical challenges involved in smartphone programming and development. As developers we have to find solutions to increasingly sophisticated devices and problems. Theres always more then one way to solve a problem in iOS programming. Sometimes the best solution isn’t the simplest one. Yet other times after painstaking work we realize the best solution really was the simplest one.
Featured Xcode Tutorials: cocos2d, & box2d
Up until now I have had a lot of experience in developing cocos2D & box2D games. I’m no expert, but I’ve had my fair share of development trials and tribulations and done a TON of trouble shooting and problem solving. I’d like to do some micro tutorials about some of the specific technical challenges I overcame. But I find it difficult on which to choose, because there are many. And most of my time is devoted to working on new and exciting Xcode projects, which is very difficult for me to pull myself from. If you think you have some specific area you want me to talk about them let me know in a reply to this blog post.
Finally I just want to point out a great resource for those wanting to learn cocos2d or as a great reference for seasoned developers, the book is: Learn Cocos2D Game Development by Steffen Itterheim.
Petroleum Field Calculator (new app)
Since I just released this new App the PFC I think I should talk about some of its features. This app is specific to people in the petroleum industry. And it basically automatically calculates industry related formulas such as “Hydrostatic Pressures” and “Formation Pressures”. There are a few petroleum apps out there but none of them look good and are overly complicated. In other cases they’re some primitive port-over made cheaply and quickly and not practical for use on a smart phone.
I used Apples own polished tools in the design and development of this app. So this means every part of the app is attractive and easy on the eyes. Even if you didn’t work in the industry you could still use this App easily. Furthermore, I wanted to make it simple for what it will be used for……that is a quick reference to some common formulas when your in your truck or on some job site in Alberta, or Saudi Arabia. Straight to the point, and simple. We all have our offices and desktop computers to do the complicated things.
New Apps and coming Tutorial
A Petroleum industry utility App of mine has been approved for the Appstore today. Its called the “Petroleum Field Calculator.”
Im also currently working on Madness Under Control, a Zombie arcade game for the iPhone.
On another note, I’d like to post my first iPhone tutorial in my next blog. I’ll pick out one of the concepts that I think is worth showing and see how it goes form there.
